Why rail symbols need network context
Railway signalling is highly system- and country-specific. A colour or lamp position that means one thing on one network may have a different operational context elsewhere.
Useful families to document
| Family | Examples |
|---|---|
| Lineside aspects | Stop/proceed, caution, speed signalling, shunting signals. |
| Route indications | Junction feathers, theatre displays, route lights. |
| Cab signalling | ETCS/ERTMS DMI, ATP, LZB-style or other network systems. |
| Protection systems | AWS, TPWS and other train-protection status/intervention indications. |
| Train systems | Doors, brakes, traction, pantograph, main breaker, wheel-slide protection. |
Signal interpretation for train operation belongs to trained staff using the current network rulebook and operating notices.
